What you’ll need
- Whatever the chosen hobby normally requires
Before you start
- Choose a beginner-safe version and follow the normal safety guidance, instruction, and protective-equipment requirements for that activity.
Ask your partner to choose one beginner-friendly part of a hobby they already enjoy. You are trying the experience, not committing to a new shared hobby or asking them to teach an entire skill.
Make the invitation easy
- Ask whether they would enjoy sharing the hobby with you; do not assume.
- Let them choose a simple starting point and a reasonable amount of time.
- Ask what they enjoy about it before asking for instructions.
- Try the activity without competing with their knowledge or criticizing how they do it.
- Afterwards, share one specific thing you understood or enjoyed.
It is fine if the hobby remains theirs. Showing interest does not require both partners to like the same activities, and your partner may prefer to keep some hobbies as independent time.
