Build a Cozy Pillow Fort with Your Child

Turn blankets and cushions into a cozy reading nook or pretend-play hideaway for children ages 3–10.

Time: 30–45 minutesWho it’s for: Ages 3–10, with an adult
A parent and child build a low pillow fort on the floor using a sofa and a lightweight sheet.

What you’ll need

  • Light blankets or sheets
  • Pillows and sofa cushions
  • Books or soft toys

Before you start

  • Build on the floor and use a sofa or other low, stable surface as the only support; avoid free-standing chairs and tall furniture.
  • Use light fabrics, leave a wide entrance, and keep the fort away from heaters, stairs, cords, candles, and breakable objects.
  • Stay nearby while children play, and take the fort down before bedtime.

A pillow fort is more fun when the child helps decide what it will become: a reading den, a spaceship, an animal clinic, or simply a cozy place to talk. The adult takes care of the structure; the child can build the story around it.

How to build it

  1. Choose a clear corner on the floor and move anything that could be knocked over.
  2. Use the sofa as one side of the fort. Drape a light sheet so the other edge reaches the floor, and have the adult check that it will not slip.
  3. Put cushions inside for seats and leave an entrance wide enough to see in and out easily.
  4. Let your child add a few safe things: a favorite toy, two books, or a handmade sign with the fort’s name.
  5. Pick one thing to do inside. Read a story, have a soft-toy picnic, or make up a short adventure.
  6. When the game is over, take the fort down together and return the cushions to their places.

Jobs by age

Children ages 3–5 can carry cushions, choose the fort’s name, and decide which toys come inside. Children ages 6–10 can sketch a plan, arrange the inside, and invent the first game. The adult still handles every part that supports the roof.
