What you’ll need
- One age-appropriate book
Before you start
- For children under three, choose sturdy books without loose or detachable parts.
Shared reading does not have to be a long bedtime routine. Ten focused minutes with one well-chosen book is enough for a calm activity you can repeat.
A simple routine
- Let your child choose between two suitable books.
- Sit somewhere comfortable and put other screens aside.
- Read at your child’s pace. Pause when they point, ask, or want to look back.
- Ask one easy question: “What do you think happens next?” or “Which part did you like?”
- Stop while the experience is still enjoyable. You can continue next time.
Adapt it as your child grows
For ages 1–3, use sturdy picture or board books, name what you see, and let the child turn pages. For ages 4–7, invite them to repeat lines, notice details, or retell part of the story. For ages 8–12, take turns reading or choose a chapter book that is still enjoyable when read aloud.
The range ends at twelve because this version is written as parent-led shared reading. Older children may prefer discussing a book you both read separately.
