What you’ll need
- Pizza dough or flatbread base
- Sauce, cheese, and chosen toppings
- Age-appropriate kitchen tools
Before you start
- An adult handles hot trays and any knife that is not appropriate for the child. Teens may use the oven only if they already know how and an adult supervises.
- Wash hands and work surfaces, check allergies, and keep raw ingredients separate when needed.
- Supervision and tasks should match the child’s actual skills, not age alone.
Homemade pizza is forgiving: the toppings do not have to look perfect, and everyone can make a section their own. Use ready-made dough or flatbread if you want more time for choosing toppings and talking together.
Start by letting everyone choose one topping. If tastes are different, divide the pizza into sections or make smaller individual pizzas. Put the ingredients within reach, assign jobs, and expect a little mess.
Choose jobs that fit your child
Ages 5–7: spread sauce with the back of a spoon, tear soft toppings, sprinkle cheese, and make a face or pattern on the pizza.
Ages 8–12: measure ingredients, knead dough, arrange toppings, and use simple tools that an adult has judged safe.
Ages 13–17: choose a recipe, prepare several ingredients, and take charge of timing. Teens who already use the oven safely can do so with an adult nearby; otherwise the adult handles it. The adult takes care of hot trays.
A simple plan
- Choose toppings together and check food allergies or dietary needs.
- Wash hands, clear the work area, and divide the jobs.
- Prepare the base, add sauce, and arrange toppings.
- An adult places the pizza in the oven and takes it out, unless an older teen already has the skills to use the oven safely under supervision.
- While it bakes, clear the table together. Let the pizza cool before the adult slices it, then ask everyone which topping combination they would make next time.
The age suggestions are only a starting point. Give your child a task they can do successfully, then add something new the next time you cook together.
